There was plenty to celebrate with the GCSE results again this year with a number of high achievers. Some of our pupils did outstandingly well, gaining 10 top-grade A* and A's, and there were plenty of other successes including a good number of students achieving the key benchmark of 5 A*-C grades. We are also very pleased that A-C pass rates have improved in numerous subjects, including those subjects with a 100% success rate. We welcome a toughening of standards by the exam boards, but we were affected by the late change to grade boundaries by the AQA exam board. That said, those pupils who re-sat with us in November significantly out-performed the national average. We are a non-selective school, welcoming children of all abilities and we therefore understand that this can affect results on a yearly basis. Unlike some other schools we do not, and would never, ask pupils to leave if they are not expected to achieve 5 A*-C grades. We also do not offer vocational courses which count towards GCSE grade C, as some other schools do; all our examination results are proper GCSEs. We commit wholeheartedly to nurturing all pupils, whatever their academic level, supporting and encouraging every one to fulfil their potential. Last year a number of our pupils had support or dispensation for their GCSE exams and were not predicted to achieve 5 A*-C's however, over half of these did achieve at least this. Their success is down to their own hard work and dedication, driven by the enthusiasm and dedication of our teachers and by the support of their parents at home. While examinations are crucial, the wider life of the College and the support and encouragement given are key to ensuring our pupils leave at the end of Year 11 ready to tackle the challenges they face in further education and beyond.
