3rd February 2010 - Year 5 Trip to Kingston Beach

On Wednesday 3 February Year 5 from Shoreham College went on a trip to Kingston Beach. As part of their Environment topic they went to see what litter was on the coast line and to collect as much as they could.

The pupils were shocked at the vast selection of natural and man made rubbish just lying on the shore.  Most of the pupils couldn’t believe just how bad it was, including bottles, crisp packets, rope and foam from boats – and even a boat wreck!

As they neared the lighthouse the pupils were greeted by a visitor. It was a man who was cycling around Britain visiting all of the RSPB sanctuaries.  He commented on how pleased he was to see children helping the environment in the local area and wished them success..

On return to college the children wrote about their experience and thought of ways to help improve the area.  There were many suggestions, which included writing to their local MP Tim Loughton to see what he could do, and asking the local council for more bins and public toilets.

This proved to be a worthwhile experience for the children as it allowed them to see first hand what damage litter can do to the environment and got them thinking about ways in which they can improve the local area.
