| 20th January 2011 - U10 Rugby v Windlesham House |
|
The Under 10’s began their season with an away match to Windlesham House. It was a perfect afternoon for rugby with super weather conditions. To the surprise of the Shoreham team however, it was to be a stern test of fitness as not only was the pitch on a slope, but it was full size!
First half began with Shoreham playing uphill, after captain Louis Martin lost the coin toss. Shoreham began strongly, making some fantastic tackles, getting to the break down and rucking and mauling superbly. There were a couple of fantastic try saving tackles from Luca Bigg and Ethan Gilbert. Unfortunately though, Windlesham were a very well drilled unit and some holes in the Shoreham defence were punished during the first half. Windlesham scored 3 unanswered tries, going into the half 15 – 0 up.
After a stirring talk from coach, Mr. Choate, and Captain Louis Martin at half time, Shoreham came out of the blocks in the second half quickly. Benedetto DeVizio picked up the ball at around half way, and now using the slope to his advantage pounded through defender after defender on his way to scoring a great try. Shortly after that a loose pass was punished by Luca Bigg who, using his pace went almost the entire length of the pitch to score a superb solo effort bringing the score to 15 – 10. There were a few excellent breaks from Kai Green, Matthew Jenner and John Shouler but unfortunately, Shoreham were unable to capitalise. Regrettably, early season fitness then became an issue for Shoreham who let in 3 tries during the remainder of the half. Final score 30 – 10.
There were a lot of positives from this match and the Shoreham boys should feel proud of what they achieved against a well coached team.
