On Saturday, after open morning, the Under 9 football team was in action in Shoreham College’s Invitational 6-a-side Tournament, now in its fifteenth year.  The boys, captained by Lucas Atherton, got off to a super start winning their opening game 1-0 against St. Bede’s Preparatory School B Team and managing a 0-0 draw against four times defending champions, Cottesmore St. Mary’s from Hove.  With 4 points from their first two games, the boys just needed a result in their last match of the group stage against Windlesham School to guarantee their progress in the competition.

There were signs of nerves prior to the start of the match, as they had already played and lost to Windlesham earlier this term.  They rose to the challenge however, and scored an early first half goal, then, dug in and defended their lead with every ounce of energy and determination they had and managed to see the game out to secure victory and top the group with seven points.

In the final, this young team played their hearts out in yet another very close game, but were denied tournament victory by the winners of group B, St. Bede’s A team who emerged this year’s Champions.

Our congratulations go to St. Bede’s who were very worthy winners and our thanks go to all the staff and parents who brought their children along to this year’s competition; A fun afternoon of football was had by all who took part on the day.

Zachary Tarry was awarded ‘Most Improved Player’ and Lucas Atherton was awarded ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the afternoon.  Well done to the whole team!
