Congratulation usually comes after a win but I think that the U16 boys Rugby team have deserved it. Playing against St Bede’s is a daunting prospect, however our minds were strong and muscles full of fish and chips. Kicking off was a real wake up call for many of those who don’t play regularly for Clubs and we were down by two tries within five minutes. As far as we were concerned, there would not be another St Bede’s player crossing our try-line until we’d spent all our energy and could tackle no more…and that is exactly what happened!
Time after time we made tackle upon tackle and amongst all the debris (bodies on the ground) Sam Jefferies and George Frost both managed to cross the St Bede’s line and put us on the score sheet. Toby Pumfrey slotted one out of two conversions to bring us within seven points. Most of the time it was the same faces making tackles (Ben Board), running with the ball (Sam Jefferies, Matt Edwards), organising team mates (Adam Munday) but sometimes we see moments of bravery and commitment.
Rich Lewis played a monster game having never played before. He made try saving tackles, got up quickly in defense and even sidestepped a couple of their players who were hell-bent on mowing him down. It is players with Rich’s enthusiasm and sheer determination that make the game.
Well done to all the players, your team spirit, determination and above all your common voice shouting ‘Come on, let’s get back at them!!!!’
