Very well done to the squad, an important game and a big win. Prior to the match, the Forwards had been working on supporting the jumper in the lineouts and the Backs worked on running angles and lines. Lots of the preparation was centred on phases of play and ensuring that the Forwards got to the breakdown in numbers whilst the Backs re-aligned with depth.
From the kick off we realised that this was not going to be an easy game as Ben Board and Darren Yaxley fought hard to win the ball in the lose. The first five minutes was scrappy with both teams finding it hard to get clean ball to their Backs; however we were successful and found ourselves within five metres of the Lingfield line. The Forwards rucked hard and applied pressure and amongst all the bodies strewn on the floor, Ross Grinyer had the sense to pick the ball up and dive over the line to open up the scoring.
An immense burst of power from Ben Board saw the second try scored as he thundered through countless tackles to put the ball down between the posts and Toby Pumfrey completed the score with a faultless conversion.
Having kept Lingfield within their own half for much of the opening half, it was inevitable that a breakaway try from their Centre led to their first score and if we were honest with ourselves, it was our lack of alertness to get numbers wide that gave them room to run.
Once again it was Adam Munday and Sam Jefferies who did most of the talking and throughout the game they worked hard to organise Forwards and Backs. Toby Pumfrey made some bone crunching tackles at Centre and JJ Self made several counter attacking runs up the middle after the kick over the top.
Toby Hordell-Welton, Ishan Patel and Luke Corke all worked hard in the front row and George Wellicome is shaping up well at second row. Darren Yaxley, Adam Picket and Ben Board are an excellent combination at back row and their presence in every ruck and maul is outstanding.
Final Score: Shoreham College 17 Lingfield Notre Dame 10
